FIFA World Cup 2026 Guide

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is the largest edition of the tournament so far: 48 teams, 104 matches and three host countries. Use this guide to understand the format, host cities, ticket options, qualified teams and the betting markets that usually matter most during the tournament.

Tournament format

How the 48-team World Cup works

The 2026 format is different from the 32-team tournaments many fans remember. More teams means more group games, more knockout places and more third-place scenarios.

Group stage

12 groups of four

Each group has four teams. Every team plays three group matches, and the group table is built on points, goal difference, goals scored and further tie-breakers if needed.

Who advances

32 teams reach knockouts

The top two teams in every group advance automatically. The eight best third-placed teams also move on, which keeps many groups alive until the final matchday.

Knockouts

Round of 32 to final

The knockout phase starts with the Round of 32, then moves through the Round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals, third-place match and final.

Tickets

Can fans still buy tickets?

FIFA lists ticket options through last-minute sales, the official marketplace and hospitality packages, subject to availability. If you are buying tickets, use official channels and check the match, city, seat category, resale rules and local entry requirements before paying.

Check availability

High-demand games can sell out quickly, especially host-nation matches and knockout fixtures.

Use official resale or exchange

Marketplace rules can differ by country, including exchange processes for Mexican residents.

Plan travel early

Sixteen host cities means flights, hotels and local transport can become the real cost driver.

Host cities

Where the FIFA World Cup 2026 is being played

The tournament is spread across Canada, Mexico and the United States. That creates very different conditions by city: climate, travel distance, time zone, stadium surface and local fan support can all matter for fans and bettors.

Qualification

How teams qualified

Most teams qualified through confederation tournaments. The format differs by region: UEFA, CONMEBOL, CAF, AFC, Concacaf and OFC each use their own routes. For 2026, Canada, Mexico and the United States qualified automatically as co-hosts.

That automatic host status is different from defending champion status. Argentina, the 2022 winner, still had to qualify through CONMEBOL rather than entering automatically as champion.

Common questions

India, hosts and defending champions

India is not among the 48 qualified teams for 2026. That should not be confused with a current finals place or a current tournament ban. For this edition, India simply is not in FIFA's list of qualified teams.

Host qualification is different: Canada, Mexico and the United States entered the tournament automatically because they are co-hosts.

Betting basics

How the format affects World Cup betting

The new format changes how fans evaluate outright bets, qualification bets and live markets. A team can still have a route forward even after a slow start because third-place ranking matters.

Group qualification

Top-two and third-place qualification markets can stay open until late in the group stage. Watch goal difference, cards and final-round scenarios.

Outright winner odds

Winner prices change as the bracket becomes clearer. A favorite with a difficult Round of 32 path can drift, while a team with a clean route can shorten.

Golden Boot markets

Top-scorer bets depend on minutes, penalty duties, team progression and group-stage matchups. One big result can move the market quickly.

Responsible gambling: Betting should be treated as entertainment, not income. Check local laws, use licensed operators only and set deposit, loss and time limits before placing a wager.
